Eight Success Elements for a Clinical Research Career

For those doctors considering a career in medical research, here’s a treat:

Having a strong clinical research foundation to rely on is critical for clinical researchers be it physicians, scientists, investigators, pharmacists, and pharmaceutical leaders. Vast experience in patient care and in the examination room provide a large stock of knowledge in this regard.

Therefore, doctors must proactively seek out opportunities to sharpen their research knowledge and skills. And starting early in their career will guarantee success in the field, notes a Harvard Medical School article.

Eight Areas for Clinical Researchers to Master to Become Successful

-Develop your understanding of best research practices.

Clinical researchers must update themselves on epidemiology, research design, developing relevant research questions, formulating and testing hypotheses, and designing clinical studies to gain a depth of insight.

-Recognize how to effectively track and interpret your data.

It’s important for a doctor to hone his/her ability to perform statistical analysis on the findings and this includes reporting the results in the most meaningful way possible.

-Consider the patient safety and ethical concerns involved in your research efforts.

The safety of clinical trial participants is of utmost importance. This involves ascertaining informed consent as well as identifying and reporting adverse events to the relevant regulating body.

-Familiarize yourself with regulatory guidelines.

In conducting research. The clinical researcher must understand the framework and regulations governing the research and be compliant. Therefore, in-depth knowledge of related regulations is imperative.

-Strengthen your leadership skills.

Managing multi-disciplinary teams and leading them to success is crucial. Designation of duties and experience in staff management is crucial in this regard.

-Communicate in a language that will resonate with different audiences

The ability to effectively communicate among different research sites, sponsors, clinical research organizations, and regulators is pivotal. So is the ability to organize the research results for publication in a timely manner in medical journals.

-Be prepared to navigate the funding world.

The ability to source funding which is specific to the situation and the constraints faced are key. It is also vital to identify the restrictions and expectations that come with the funding.

-Translate your findings into meaningful steps for patients

The capability to apply a variety of discoveries in real-world scenarios beyond the research setting will hugely improve medical outcomes for patients.
