Episode’s Description
What do doctors really know about AI in medicine right now?
Not much. And that’s a problem. Over 950 AI medical devices have already been approved by the FDA. AI is reading scans. Predicting heart attacks. Listening to doctor-patient conversations. And most doctors are completely unprepared. Dr. Melvin Speisman spent 25 years teaching internal medicine at the University of Illinois before he realized the same thing.
Dr. Speisman is an internist, academic doctor, and Fellow of Artificial Intelligence and Medicine. He spent decades at the bedside and in medical education. He trained generations of residents. Then something happened. He started hearing about AI in medicine – really hearing about it. He completed certifications at Harvard Medical School, MIT, and Northwestern’s Kellogg School of Management. What he learned stopped him in his tracks. Doctors weren’t just behind on AI. They were dangerously behind. So in 2024, he co-founded the American College of Artificial Intelligence and Medicine – a nonprofit dedicated to educating doctors on the AI revolution already reshaping their hospitals. He left his tenured role to lead it full-time. He’s impacting healthcare differently by building the first institution designed to close medicine’s most dangerous knowledge gap.
In this episode, you’ll hear how one doctor went from 25 years in conventional medicine to founding a national AI organization. You’ll learn about the AI tools already inside your hospital, how ambient AI is helping doctors reconnect with patients, and what you need to know to stay ahead. Whether you’re a practicing doctor or a medical student, this conversation is your wake-up call. Listen now at Postcall: Beyond the White Coat.
