On October 17, 2023, we were proud to see our co-founder, Dr. Selina Chew, invited to speak at Hospital Sultan Idris Shah in Serdang. Addressing a full room of house officers and contract medical officers, Dr. Selina’s talk, titled “The Road Not Taken,” centered on exploring diverse career pathways for doctors and finding purpose in an evolving healthcare landscape.
In light of Malaysia’s current contract issues, Dr. Selina shared her personal journey, reflecting on the lessons she’s learned along the way. She offered practical advice on how doctors can proactively prepare for non-traditional roles and remain adaptable, urging everyone to see their careers as opportunities to create impact, both within and beyond the hospital walls.
Dr. Selina emphasized the value of completing housemanship and compulsory service as essential steps for those pursuing a long-term career in healthcare. She encouraged everyone to consider various avenues—whether clinical, research, or non-clinical—reminding them that a fulfilling career can take many forms and that doctors can impact healthcare differently.
In her talk, Dr. Selina inspired attendees to think beyond the traditional paths and imagine themselves as architects of change. She highlighted how doctors can make a difference by embracing innovative roles, exploring technology and healthcare intersections, and advocating for new solutions in patient care. Whether by joining start-ups, engaging in research, or taking on healthcare leadership roles, doctors today have the power to redefine healthcare for the better.

This session was an inspiring moment for the doctors in attendance, equipping them with insights and motivation to face challenges and explore “the road not taken” with confidence. We’re thrilled to support our community of doctors as they navigate their unique career paths, and we look forward to continuing to empower them to impact healthcare differently.
