Epidemiologist Dr. Dhesi Raja of Sabah developed the Artificial Intelligence in Medical Epidemiology (AIME) tool that gathers and extrapolates data that would warn of a dengue outbreak 2 to 3 months in advance. It has an accuracy of over 80% within a radius of 400 meters.
He and his team comprising Jamal Robinson (US), Zhen Zhang (US & China) and Rainer Mallol (Dominican Republic) were recognized by Harvard University as among the top 8 young health innovators. “For this project we trained computers to understand how diseases and data behave. [From the correlations of several variables], the artificial intelligence will notify the public on when and where the next deadly infectious diseases will erupt.” said Dr Raja in a local media report.
Dr Raja and team also worked with the Brazilian government in 2018 to identify possible dengue and zika hotspots ahead of the Rio Olympics.
He and his team have also set up a corporation in Silicon Valley looking for business partners to finance research development targeting countries badly affected by dengue. Their plan is to improve the platform for other diseases such as HIV, tuberculosis, malaria, and flu.
