Dr. Jasman Haris is Managing Director of Anzen Health, a subsidiary of HealthMetrics Sdn Bhd. At Anzen Health, Dr. Jasman oversees the medical claims processing incurred by the many Healthcare Partners and Medical Providers of HealthMetrics. In a nutshell, Anzen Health manages the financial aspect of medical claims of these healthcare partners. Typically, healthcare partners could comprise private hospitals, GP Clinics, dental clinics, physiotherapy centers, outpatient specialist centers, optical providers, and more.
When Dr. Jasman left the MOH, it was with the plan of returning to Australia where he had obtained his medical degree. When that plan did not pan out, he did the next best thing which was to apply for positions outside of clinical medicine. That journey led him by chance to a business administration services company CompuMed Services Sdn Bhd which offered him his first break in clinical administration.
The Career Transition Journey
In seeking a career outside of clinical medicine, Dr. Jasman put up his resume on several job portals and got a call from CompuMed. They asked him if he wanted to try out something new. He agreed, went for the interview and was appointed for a Medical Advisory role. The MD told him that despite his lack of experience, he was being offered the position because of his good attitude.
The salary was quite attractive compared to what colleagues in clinical medicine who were of the same level as himself were earning within the hospital system. At his job interview, Dr. Jasman made the point to state what he could offer the company. Despite being a fresh face in the field, Dr. Jasman felt very fortunate indeed to have been offered a position in clinical administration. It appears that as far back as 2012, this sector looked for experience when hiring doctors.
Eventually, Dr. Jasman was promoted to the position of Head of Department, Provider Network at CompuMed before moving to a good position in clinical administration at PM Care Sdn Bhd. Later he was offered the position of Head of Provider Network and Medical Affairs at Healthmetrics before being promoted as the MD of its subsidiary, Anzen Health.
What it Takes to be in Clinical Administration
In order to get into clinical administration, doctors need to possess prior experience in the field. This is of utmost importance. Those with prior experience stand a decent chance at being hired in the field.
The next best thing for a doctor wanting to get into clinical administration would be to gain an additional qualification. Dr. Jasman has been in the field of clinical administration for over 10 years now. He says, “for every medical doctor out there who wants to venture into clinical medicine like myself, please get additional qualifications like an MBA or a Master of Public Health or other relevant degrees such as in occupational medicine, health economics, medical statistics etc. This is crucial.”
When he obtained his MBA degree majoring in marketing management, it really helped him in his work. He was able to see things clearly and from multiple perspectives. When he combined the two worlds of medicine and finance & administration, he was able to make sharp and accurate decisions. He was also well able to manage people and deal with the work pressure. Those around him noticed it and conveyed to him that he was making on-target decisions. With an MBA degree, he had a fresh outlook of the clinical administration industry.
The Power of a Doctor’s Good Attitude
According to Dr. Jasman, attending MFM’s Diverse Careers for Doctors Webinars or volunteering at medical organizations are definitely plus points and are indicative of effort. They point to the good attitude of the doctor. These mentions on a resume will get noticed and the doctor will stand out among other candidates.
Coupled with experience and additional qualifications, a good attitude could land a doctor a position in clinical administration. In his case, while he had no prior experience or additional qualification, Dr. Jasman’s good attitude was picked up by the interviewers and he was offered the job.
