A Bright Future for Doctors in Private Healthcare Management Part I

Datin Dr. Maya is CEO of MAHSA Health, a primary healthcare center. Her career in healthcare management began when she worked at a clinic in Klang, Selangor. Datin Dr. Maya went on to manage the clinic and is now managing MAHSA health.

She graduated from the University of Manipal in 2003 and is one of the pioneering LCP doctors to be certified by the Ministry of Health, Malaysia. Datin Dr Maya is also Deputy Dean  for the Aesthetic Medicine Department at MAHSA University as well as founder of the School of Beauty, MAHSA Avenue International College. She is heavily involved in the development of the Aesthetic and Healthy Aging field in Malaysia.

Her Journey into Private Healthcare Management

Datin Dr Maya  left the civil service after  8 years of being with the government to fulfill her passion of  becoming an Aesthetic Practitioner. It is a requirement in Malaysia that doctors must be in private practice for a minimum of two years in order to be credentialed in the Licensing and Credentialing Privilege (LCP) certification in Aesthetic Medicine.

MAHSA Health came about when a need arose for clinics within the surrounding communities. In this regard, Datin Dr Maya wears many hats. Not only is she the CEO of the healthcare center, she is also the Medical Director of MAHSA Health.

MAHSA Health consists of a few primary care services which include a dialysis service, an eye clinic, polyclinics, physiotherapy services, dental services, lab services, and aesthetic and wellness services. Many of these exist under one roof known as the MAHSA Health Nexus which is located on Jalan Ilmu (best known as Jalan University). Plans are underway  to open a retail pharmacy, confinement services, as well as an independent retirement service for mobile and healthy senior citizens.  Additionally, the Nexus will also include a specialist clinic.

Among the main purposes of MAHSA Health Nexus is to provide primary care as well as post-secondary care services to patients. As an example, when a patient has had surgery in  hospital and has been discharged and needs the follow-up services of a physician, a physiotherapist and/or a dietician, he/she may obtain all of these services at a one-stop center at the Nexus making the experience a convenient one for the patient.

Datin Dr Maya sees healthcare management as an interesting task and is taking up the challenge. Doctors can expect to do well in this field. Here, she shares what doctors might expect  in a career in healthcare management.

Roles for Doctors in Private Healthcare Management

Primarily, roles for doctors in healthcare management can be divided into two main groupings: management roles and primary care services. Primary care services basically comprise GP services and could include specialist services as well.  Whereas management roles are far more extensive.

As a CEO of MAHSA Health, Datin Dr Maya is assisted by three medical directors in management roles, all of whom are medical doctors. They are the Medical Director for Services, Research and Development, and Partnerships. With them onboard, MAHSA Health is poised for growth.

The three functions of services, research and development and partnerships involve crucial management roles. In addition, the doctors in primary care services often contribute to the decision-making process at the healthcare center. “This is because they make the best resource persons. These doctors have first-hand encounters with patients and understand patient needs and patient care and are aware of the equipment needed” noted Datin Dr Maya.
