The 10 Steps to a Successful Career Change include:

  1. Assess your current job satisfaction by keeping a journal of your daily reactions toward your current job. Identify recurring themes and know what your likes and dislikes are about your current job. Zero-in on where the dissatisfaction lies. That will tell you what jobs avoid.
  2. Assess your interests, values, skills by reviewing your past roles, jobs, projects etc to identify your preferred activities and skills. Then determine if your core values and skills are addressed through your current job.
  3. Considering alternative careers by researching career options. Discuss your core values and skills with family, friends, and networking contacts who will help you see clearly about your core values and skills.
  4. Check out job options by identifying new fields for yourself and engaging in in-depth research. This can be done via Google.
  5. Get personal by reaching out to contacts who are in your field of interest. LinkedIn is a great resource for this purpose and so is your university alumni contacts.
  6. Shadow professionals in your field of interest by observing their work first-hand. Spend from anywhere between a few hours to a few days doing it.
  7. Volunteer and freelance in the field you are interested in to try it out to see if the field is a good fit for you.
  8. Take a class or a course that would serve as a bridge between your background and the field you are interested in.
  9. Look for ways to upskill yourself in your current job which would pave the way for your new job. Attend as many in-house training sessions as possible and offer to write grants if that’s what’s needed in the field you’re eyeing.
  10. Consider a new job in the same industry as there are many roles in an industry which would benefit from the depth of knowledge you possess about the industry.
